Characteristics of the Katahdin

This medium sized heavily muscled sheep breed is hardy and has a natural tolerance to extremes in climate and under varying feed and forage systems. Enjoyed as an easy-care meat type sheep, this shedding hair sheep is capable of high performance and vigor under varying environmental circumstances.
They can be of any coat colour, from white to brown to spotted. The animals are preferred polled, however horned ewes are still eligible for registration. The breed has a very quiet and docile disposition. They are easy to handle even by woman and children.
Katahdin ewes are great mothers, with a strong maternal instinct and are typically arrive at puberty early for fertility. Lambing is usually trouble free, as birth sizes are small initially, but rapid growth after birth is commonplace. The ewes are well able to support twins and triplets with a good supply of milk.
Katahdin sheep produce a lean well muscled carcass with meat of a mild flavour that stays consistent even in older mature sheep.
JRJ Katahdins will be offering lambs for sale in the future.
