History of the Australian Shepherd

Blue as a puppyThe actual origin of the Australian shepherd is believed to be from the Basque settlers that had moved to Australia from Europe in the 1800's, bringing their sheep and sheepdogs to that continent with them. The breed was then introduced to North America from Australia and came to be known as the Australian Shepherd.  The breed went mostly unnoticed until the 1950's at which time their intelligence and tireless work ethic made them a favorite as performers in rodeos and movies during the period.
